At age 27, Charlie Chaplin was at the height of his career. Above is a letter he wrote to a young girl who had written him about her desire to become an actress. To me, what’s most interesting about the letter is the letterhead: Charlie Chaplin Music Publishing Co.
Today I had lunch with some friends, newly arrived from NYC. One of them mentioned how they’ve found that in Hollywood people who produce entertainment for the web, especially those who are hyphenates (actor/writer/producer/editor) are not taken very seriously… or at best, perhaps classified as unfocused.
The letterhead reminds me that at the start of any new medium, the people who are trailblazing are the hyphenates.
Chaplin composed the soundtracks for his films. Three years later he founded United Artists.
